About the Item
Primitive abstract modernist oil painting on homosote board by Zoute ( born Leon Salter 1903 - 1976 - North Rose NY ) two figures - signed bottom right Z. '42. This painting is reminiscent of the Cobra group paintings of Jean Dubuffet / Karel Appel. Zoute was a self taught artist. He was part of the great modern wave. He painted from 1940-1954 ( in 1954 upon the passing of his wife Thelma - he never again painted. He was well exhibited during his lifetime - represented by NYC galleries during the 1940's early 1950's with one man shows at Mortimer Levitt Gallery, Joseph Heller Gallery, Grand Central Galleries. His work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art NYC, Whitney Museum NYC and many other prominent museum exhibitions throughout the USA. He was chosen to exhibit at the invitation only Iowa State University International Show ( 1946-1947) along with a select group of the most important artists of the day - Picasso, Braque, Klee. His work was reviewed and highly acclaimed in the New York Times as being the best colorist of the day. The painter Arthur Dove said of Zoute - this guy can paint !
