1784 Engraved Elegance of Mary, Queen of Scots - Tragic Monarch
About the Item
This is an authentic engraved portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Mary was one of the most fascinating and tragic figures in Scottish and English history. She became queen consort in France through her marriage to Francis II, and after being widowed, returned to Scotland to reign as queen. Her rule was marred by scandal, political intrigue, and turmoil, leading to her forced abdication and escape to England.
Seeking protection from her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, Mary instead found herself imprisoned for 19 years before being executed for her involvement in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth and claim the English throne.
This engraving, published as the act directs on July 1st, 1784, is another piece from Harrington's edition of "Rapin's History of England." It captures the elegance and royal demeanor of Mary, despite the turmoil and tragedy that surrounded her life and reign.
