Large Antique Print of Meta-Koosega, an Ojibwe Warrior, circa 1838

About the Item

The Stoic Warrior: Meta-Koosega of the Ojibwe This lithograph is titled "Meta-Koosega, a Chippeway Warrior." It is a hand-colored print from the collection "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," which features portraits that were published after Charles Bird King’s original works circa 1838. The Chippewa, more commonly known as Ojibwe or Ojibwa and also referred to as Saulteaux in the northern regions, are a large Anishinaabe-speaking community. They have a wide distribution across southern Canada, the northern Midwestern United States, and the Northern Plains. The Ojibwe people are part of the broader cultural group known as the Northeastern Woodlands and have traditional territories that span the Subarctic to the northern United States. Meta-Koosega is portrayed with a thoughtful expression, donning a fur cloak and a silver peace medal, indicative of his esteemed status within his tribe and symbolic of the diplomatic relations between Native American leaders and the United States government. His portrait reflects the dignity with which Charles Bird King aimed to depict the Native American leaders of the era, acknowledging their sovereignty and the important role they played in their communities’ histories. These lithographs serve not just as art but as valuable historical documents. They provide a visual record of the influential figures in Native American history at a time when their cultures were facing significant challenges due to European settlement and expansion.
