Antique 17th Century Flemish Historical Tapestry, Featuring Dido and Aeneas

About the Item

A French Aubusson historical tapestry from the late 17th century, depicting Aeneas relating his adventures to Dido, from 'The Story of Dido and Aeneas' series after Virgil’s 'The Aeneid'. This set was woven from cartoons created by the French painter Isaac Moillon (1614-1673). Moillon was one of the court painter of King Louis 14th and he painted many tapestry cartoons for the Royal Workshop of Aubusson including a 'Story of Dido and Aeneas' composed of nine pieces. In this episode, the Trojan’s ships ran aground on the banks of Carthage. Aeneas is invited to a banquet by Queen Dido and while he tells her about the woes of Troy and their flight, Dido falls in love with the young hero. Aeneas is in the center, Achate on the left and Dido on the right. Love, disguised as Ascagne, Aeneas’s son, who struck Queen Dido with his sting. To the left one man is playing the harp, one is pouring from an urn, while the third carries fruit on a platter, within an interior, set against a landscape with trees, all within a border to the top and sides woven with flower garlands and a bird to each of the top corners. Wool with silk inlay. Size 9'7 H x 15'1 W, excellent condition. Hanging: The tapestry comes ready for hanging, with linen backing and a strip of hook and loop tape at the top end, which can be connected to the opposite side of the supplied hook and loop tape, which could be tacked to your wall. For those who prefer the use of a tapestry rod, we can add the appropriate size loops to accommodate your needs. We now have a large selection of antique tapestry rods available as well, which we can provide detail upon request.
