Tom Wesselman, Nude Banner

About the Item

Tom Wesselmann Nude Banner Felt Tapestry 1968-69 58 x 75 in, 147 x 190 cm Edition of 2 Felt and 18 Vinyl Manufactured by Betsy Ross Flag & Banner Co, Manufacturers & Multiples Inc. Provenance: Private Collection, France Tom Wesselmann, who studied at the Cooper Union in New York during the mid-1950s, is widely considered to be one of the leading American Pop artists, well known for his collages, prints, paintings, and sculptures depicting still lifes, landscapes, and nudes. Wesselmann reinterpreted these themes using a reductive line and bold, flat primary colors, often incorporating symbols of American culture. In 1961, he began his most famous body of work, Great American Nude series which incorporated patriotic symbols with the great art historical image of the nude. The series "Nude Banner," produced in the late 60's, was originally commissioned to be a set of 20 felt tapestries. After the first couple came out of production, he felt it best to turn to vinyl, leaving us with two Artist's Proof editions of this felt tapestry.
