The Quest For The Holy Graal, Aubusson Tapestry - N° 875

About the Item

The Quest for the Holy Grail In The Quest for the Holy Grail, an allegorical and mystical story in which the clerical influence and the Cistercian spirit make themselves felt, the "celestial" adventures are opposed to earthly undertakings and the figure of Gilead takes precedence over that of Lancelot. It is from the serialization of the different tables of the Grail that the Arthurian adventures develop. At the Last Supper where Christ took his last meal in the company of his apostles, a prefiguration of his eucharistic sacrifice, succeeded in the time of Joseph of Arimathea the service of the Grail. In the Quest, it is the assembly of Knights of the Round Table who are honored with the passing of the Grail through a wondrous celebration. This epiphany prompts the departure of the Arthurian knights in search of the Grail, kept in the castle of Corbenic by the line of the kings of the Grail. All the unfinished adventures set up in the History of the Holy Grail will then find their resolution thanks to the arrival of the chosen knight, Galaad the pure, the son of Lancelot and the daughter of King Pellès.. The loss of the Grail and its return to the East in the city of Sarras results from the corruption of the inhabitants of Great Britain and corresponds to the end of the marvelous adventures associated with this object. After the death of Gilead, the last novel in the cycle thus inevitably moves towards the death of King Arthur, the disappearance of his knights, and the destruction of his kingdom.

The Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century.
