Antique 18th/19th Century Rose-Cut Diamonds Devant de Corsage Silver Portuguese

About the Item

Antique Late 18th / 19th Century rose-cut diamond devant de corsage or stomacher in closed-back silver, Portugal. This Portuguese jewel is composed by a main ribbon-tied bow openwork plaque with garland, floral, foliate and scrolled motifs, suspending four smaller drops and a larger one articulated to the center which, in turn, suspends three similarly-designed smaller drops. This jewel is step-down collet-set throughout with circular and elongated rose-cut diamonds. Stomachers (or Devants de Corsage) are a kind of bodice ornament which can be seen as oversized brooches made in several articulated sections to allow the wearer freedom of movement. The most fascinating are a mixture of diamonds in the shapes of flowers, foliage, ribbons and bow-knots cascading into an ever-narrowing V-shape, such as the present example here available for sale. Genuine and original 19th stomachers of this size, style and design are exceedingly rare and highly collectible. Most of these treasures now belong to museums and the most important private collections, out of reach to the general public. Dimensions: 11.0 x 7.4 cm. Gross Weight: 63.29g (68.10g with brooch fitting).
