Victorian Hand-Carved Labradorite Monkey Diamond Stick Pin
About the Item
During the late 1800s, monkey motifs were incorporated into artwork and fashion, their exotic and unusual appearance causing them to rise in popularity. In particular, monkey heads and faces carved from labradorite stone were sometimes used in jewelry, generally incorporated into stickpins and charms. Often pictured with an eerie, macabre appearance, they could also be adorned with gemstones and set in precious metals. Labradorite monkeys still have a unique appeal in the modern day, making antique and vintage pieces quite collectible!
An artistic labradorite monkey stick pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This unique piece consists of a hand-carved labradorite monkey head attached to a gold pin, and is a wonderful example of the original Victorian era trend. The 3-dimensional design depicts a small monkey's face, portrayed with realistic features, a wrinkled brow, and smiling expression. Two sparkling rose cut diamonds represent each of its eyes, and miniature gold earrings are attached to each ear. The labradorite stone has a marvelous grey-green color, with soft iridescent properties and a satiny finish. Accompanying the stick pin is the original antique box, which has a deep purple velvet exterior and satiny interior. Stamped inside the lid of the box is "The Diamond Merchants Alliance 68 Piccadilly London W." This fun and unusual piece would make a special addition to any antique collection!
The stick pin measures 2 7/8" in total length. The carved labradorite monkey measures 1/2" tall, 3/8" wide (from ear to ear), and 1/2" thick.
