MiriamHaskell 1926-39 ArtDeco Enamel Aqua GiltFiligree Scallop BrassClipEarrings

About the Item

During the Art Deco period, Miriam Haskell and her first designer since 1926 Frank Hess created these blue-tone enameled scallop-edged Russian-gilt brass earrings with intricate wire decoration. While no Haskell costume jewelry was signed until 1947 when they frequently used a curled-French-wire-hinge clip, the older fasteners on our earrings with folded flat backs are among the earliest hinge clips from the 1930s that were identified by author Cathy Gordon, who wrote the revised hardcover book Miriam Haskell Jewelry. The matte speckled aqua bezel-set cabochons are indistinguishable from North American turquoise. From their open backs, they appear to be made from a solid halved bead of glass or galalith given the visible grove across their flat centers. Like inlayed solid-blue turquoise, the surrounding enamel was carefully painted inside metal swirl shapes. These smooth surfaces in cool colors are contrasted by golden twisted or looped wire accented by six tiny ball beads, whose wiring is hidden on the back by the donut-hole plate. Miriam Haskell early works by Frank Hess are among our favorite jewelry, so please view our multiple listings for their designs that date no later than the 1940s. These earrings pair well with another Art-Deco aqua-glass-bead gilt-brass-chain bib necklace by Haskell/Hess, whose distinct dangling metallic caps have similar ball accents at the ends of their open prongs.

  • Antique ArtDeco French ArtPlasticSet BlackSphereMotif CrystalEarrings CoilBangle
    Located in Chicago, IL
In the Art-Deco period when geometric, monotone and sparkly designs became fashionable, leading Paris-based couture designer Elsa Schiaparellli set trends with her artistic use of new plastic resins in bold costume jewelry. This progressive French style is exemplified by this unsigned antique black sphere-motif pair of a coiled bangle bracelet and two-tier crystal earrings. The heat-set curvilinear plastic, along with the silver screw-hardware of the earrings, date the set to no earlier than the 1920s and no later than 1930s. Each inch-diameter earring features 18 black molded bezels containing brilliant rose-cut crystals, while their filigree-like concealed black frames are riveted in back where they twist-fasten with very thin silver hardware. The rhinestones rise above the bezels to maximize their sparkle in rainbow colors, which is accentuated by the stacked frames...

  • Schreiner 1950s 22 RuffleProngSetCrystals PaleYellow AuroraBorealis ClipEarrings
    By Henry Schreiner
    Located in Chicago, IL
In 1956 when Christian Dior's ultra-feminine New Look had dominated fashion for nearly a decade, Schreiner New York handcrafted these opulent unsigned earrings with 22 prong-set open-back crystals to accompany the evening-wear of an American high-end fashion designer. They may have been for client Pauline Trigere when her ready-to-wear collections with accessories including unmarked-Schreiner jewelry were sold by NYC's Bergdorf Goodman and worn by her clients including Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Comparatively, Schreiner jewelry produced in the 1950s for direct sale to high-end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue, were the only pieces to include a brand signature. Using the best quality European crystals that were custom-made for him, the founder Henry Schreiner was among the world's leading glass-jewelry designers before he died in 1954, whereafter his daughter and her husband continued with their handcrafted production. The family shared this distinction with Western Germany-based Max Muller and Paris-based Roger Jean Pierre, who were commissioned to create haute-couture pieces for the world's leading fashion houses. Notably in 1949, Henry Schreiner was commissioned by Dior to create several exclusive pieces. We know these earrings were not created earlier than 1956 because of the use of iridescent coating on some of the crystals that produces a rainbow effect. Known as aurora-borealis (AB) stones, Swarovski initially produced them exclusively for a haute-couture collection that year by Dior. Shortly thereafter, the Schreiner team had access to such colorful stones, and most certainly used them as soon as possible to enable their American fashion-designer clients to compete with the new Dior iridescent-colors trend. As Schreiner introduced its "ruffle" settings in 1957, we can see that they evolved from a smaller ruffle the year prior that is present on the tips of the marquise-shaped pale yellow stones...
