Victorian Sterling Engraved Book Chain Locket Necklace Birmingham c. 1880

About the Item

Why is Birmingham famous for jewellery? In the 19th century, Birmingham was the birthplace of the industrial revolution with factories, workshops and crafts springing up all over, leading the city to become known as 'the workshop of the world'. In it's heyday in 1913, over 30,000 people were employed in Birmingham's jewelry trade. This hand engraved locket necklace is a good example of the craftsmanship of that period. It has beautiful engraved studs on the chain accented with round studs for a three dimensional effect. The engraved oval locket is a nice contrast to the detail in the chain. The locket can be removed and the chain worn separately (The chain can be worn longer as a result). The inside of the locket has room for two medium size photos.
