Jill Garber Antique Austro Hungarian Cross Necklace with Turquoise and Amethyst

About the Item

At the center of this refined Bohemian necklace is an iconic mid 1800's Austro Hungarian amethyst and turquoise Bishop's cross measuring 2.88" ( including bale) . Bejeweled with old rose cut Amethyst combined with turquoise cabochons, each mounting has lovely pinch back detail. Characteristic of fine Austro Hungarian jewelry is the engraved filigree underside or back. Our neck chain design had to stand alone and be worthy of the cross, so we crafted six Rococo style drops that combine deep purple Amethyst cabochons with natural blue green turquoise. An elegant beaded frame surrounds each beautiful drop. The overall length of this necklace is 19.50 inches, plus the 2.88 inch cross with jeweled bale. "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, clearly demonstrates the important role of religious art and artifacts in the international design and style world. This glorious necklace makes a rather divine statement piece for any occasion. The second Amethyst Bishops cross necklace in last images of this listing, is also available in our storefront. We think these look amazing together. Amethyst has been one of the world's most revered stones for many centuries. Found in Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Africa, Canada, Russia, the USA and Europe, this stone has a rich history that many civilizations have placed in high value. Many believe that the Amethyst crystal was synonymous with luxury. As such it was highlighted in crowns, scepters and rings, Christian Bishops once wore Amethyst rings because its purple color was meant to symbolize royalty and an allegiance to Christ. • Antique nineteenth century Austro Hungarian old cut faceted amethyst Bishops cross with turquoise cabochons • Six 16 x 12 mm natural amethyst cabochons • Six 6 mm natural turquoise cabochons • Overall necklace length 19.50 inches plus the 2.88 inch cross with bale • Handcrafted in sterling silver with signature studio patina • One of a kind Jill Garber necklace • Hallmarked JG • Size adjustments are always provided as our courtesy Jill Garber’s Collection jewelry begins with antiquities and original ornamentation uniquely designed into timeless works of art. The gems are all set in silver gilt as was the custom of the Austro-Hungarian jewels. In the center is a gorgeous Bohemian Garnet cabochon. The garnet is 9mm by 7mm. Surrounding the garnet are Amethyst, Turquoise and Pearls all set in raised cut down collets. The gems continue onto the bale with a Pearl, Turquoise and Amethyst. The locket opens to reveal places for two photos if desired. I love the way the gems are set in the raised settings on the locket creating a visually stunning and dramatic piece.
