Art Deco Charlton & Co Enamelled Cigarette Case, ca. 1920s

About the Item

Art Deco Charlton & Co Enamelled Cigarette Case, ca. 1920s A beautiful 18k gold cigarette case with black enamel surround and very special reverse lattice designed lily stem motif in striking blue enamel. About Charlton & Co Charlton & Co were founded in 1909 by John W. Charlton and Robert Chapin in New York and sold soon after to Grant Peacock and James Todd. They employed the genius French designer Maurice Duvalet, who created jewels en par with the French Art Deco jewellers. Their most notable client was Edward, Prince of Wales, who purchased a two-toned cigarette case. The company continued to thrive and opened branches in Florida and Paris in the 1920s. However, during the depression the company had to close branches and let go of their famous designer Duvalet, who went on to work for Van Cleef & Arpels and create the iconic ballerina brooches.
