Ancient Roman Military Bronze Stag And Eagle 1st-2nd century AD Guarantee Rare

About the Item

This Ancient Roman Military Bronze eagle and stag, dating from the 1st to 2nd century AD, stands at a modest yet captivating 3 1/8 inches in height. The finely cast bronze sculpture showcases an eagle alongside a stag, symbolizing the divine entities Jupiter and Juno, believed to be protective deities aiding in victory. This unique representation is associated with Jupiter Dolichenus, a Roman military mystery cult that emerged in Southeastern Turkey and swiftly gained traction among the legions, spreading westward into the heart of the Roman Empire. The intricacy of the bronze casting underscores the importance of religious symbolism within the military context, portraying a blend of spirituality and martial prowess. The rarity of this artifact adds to its allure, making it a distinctive piece within the realm of ancient Roman art. Its provenance, traced back to a private collection in NYC and acquired in the 1990s, further enhances its historical significance, connecting it to a specific moment in time and the appreciation of a discerning collector. This bronze eagle and stag stand not only as a testament to Roman military traditions but also as a tangible link to the religious and cultural intricacies of the time. Provenance: Ex Privat NY collection acquired 1990s.
