South Indian Thali Tamil Nadu circa 1850s Ornament
About the Item
A stunning ceremonial Hindu marriage ornament, also called ‘thali’ or ‘kazhutthuru’ from Tamil Nadu, mid 19th Century. This impressive gold pendant shows the goddess of good fortune, Laskhmi, surrounded by birds and devotees. Its impressive workmanship and gold carvings show the gleam of red foil backing on the front and the sides. The sides of the pendant feature an opening, through which the ornament can worn as a necklace. The pendant is a large and important thali, which is also exemplified by its detail and intricacy.
Similar pieces have been described in various publications and can be found in museums, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum.
