AncientGreekStyle Sculptural OpenWork BezelSetLapisCabochon Handmade Gold Ring

About the Item

Found in Greece, this ancient style gold-smithed sculptural open-work ring features at its raised end a bezel-set lapis cabochon, while the other end of the by-pass band below is shaped like a sprig of laurel leaves or miniature olive branch. While unsigned, the alloy of gold or gilt bronze was clearly handmade and soldered by a skilled artisan, who left traces of minute hammering throughout. Suggesting very old age beyond its lack of signature for an artistic piece, some debris surrounds the edge of most of the bezel. In ancient Greece, laurel shrubs were made into crowns or wreaths as a symbol of victory in sporting events, such as for gladiators. Greek mythology used the olive branch as a symbol of friendship or peace. The 1.5-inch top of the ring extends past the knuckle when worn, or over the finger joint if worn the other way. We conservatively date the ring to the 20th Century as it reminds us of ancient-Greek revivals by Zolotas, for whom Claude Lalanne designed laurel-leaf limited editions--although we could not find a matching design.
