Early Victorian 18 Karat Gold & Carnelian Intaglio Ring

About the Item

This charming 18 karat gold ring has been set with an oval carnelian intaglio featuring the bust of a lady. The ring and intaglio which date to circa 1835 could be described as late Georgian or early Victorian in their age and whilst probably originally crafted for a lady, could be worn by a man also as a pinky ring. The handmade ring centres on the north south facing carnelian intaglio of a period lady with her hair tied high. The split shoulders feature some original engraving which has worn on one side, commensurate with use for a ring nearing 200 years of age. A charming antique ring with lots of character and very much as wearable today as it was in 1835. Ring size - 50/K Marked - unmarked but tests as 18 karat gold Total weight of piece - 3.74 grams

    Located in New Orleans, LA
Exceptionally rare and fashioned in the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the carved carnelian gemstone at the center of this ring hails from the Roman Empire. Displaying a rich red color and carved with the image of two Roman deities with a child, the creation exudes the glory of late antiquity. Each taking a classical contrapposto stance, the leftmost god appears crowned with laurels and grasping a staff, while the other appears nude. At their feet, an infant stretches his arms upward toward the divine figures. The crimson carnelian, more than a millennia-old, is set into a later 14K gold ring setting...
