Personal style in Minneapolis

In every room, a designer makes a standout move that speaks to his or her philosophy while granting a client’s wish — to live with a certain color, a look, a sensibility. New York–based designer Nate Berkus and his design partner in Chicago, Lauren Buxbaum Gordon, have refined their moves to perfection, as this minimal dining room outside Minneapolis makes clear. Bucket chairs from the Danish brand Gubi surround a custom oak table beneath a stupendous Italian Empire chandelier sourced via 1stDibs. All stand out. So what’s the big move? “Well, the wallpaper, of course,” Gordon says, referring to Pierre Frey’s Mauritius print. “I kept pulling more subtle textures and patterns, and our client would send me back to the drawing board every time. Finally, I got the hint!” That would be an example of the firm’s philosophy in action: “Your home should tell your story.”

“Beauty and comfort are so subjective, but regardless of personal tastes, it’s hard to dislike a collection of furniture and accessories that feels like a reflection of you and your family.”
