Sublime Drama

Photo by William Jess Laird and styled by Colin King

Before establishing his New York–based studio, Andre Mellone worked for a number of top architectural firms known for their historical rigor. So, who better to design an Upper East Side apartment evoking the sumptuous severity of Piero Portaluppi’s Villa Necchi Campiglio, the rationalist masterpiece in Milan that’s famously featured in Luca Guadagnino’s film I Am Love? A custom-designed and exquisitely crafted Calacatta Monet marble mantel establishes the tone of the elegant living room, while a single striking plaster sconce by Jean-Charles Moreux, a pair of lissome Swedish stools upholstered in a graphic Aissa Dione fabric and two trim Gio Ponti lounge chairs, found on 1stDibs, add to its air of European refinement. But what makes the room distinctly personal is the custom Deco rug, its design conceived by the client.
