Charles & Co.

Joy-sparking Style

When Soho House was first the height of hip, Vicky Charles was its design director. She earned her chops crafting interiors that made club members feel instantly welcome — discovering in the process that design is as much about emotion as aesthetics. Today, her studio, Charles & Co., specializes in creating homes for A-list clients that are luxurious, livable and happy-making. She brought delight to the owners of this 19th-century Brooklyn brownstone by conceiving a stylish dining area that can do double duty, hosting both intimate family gatherings and formal dinners for 10. Charles achieved a vibrant versatility by combining different decades and styles of furnishings, from the chandelier and sconces from Remains Lighting to the Swedish flat-weave carpet from FJ Hakimian. Key among the pieces that give the room its freshness and structure are Luteca’s contemporary but vintage-inspired Eugenio dining chairs, available on 1stDibs. “Their pitched back is ideal for extended periods of use,” says Charles, still hospitality minded. “But what makes it one of our favorites is the handcrafted frame adorned with meticulous brass details. It elevates the piece.”
