Modernism as the Maine Attraction

Photos by William Jess Laird

John and Christine Gachot, partners in life and in their Manhattan design firm, find inspiration in fashion, art and film, “whether it’s the silhouette of a Cartier watch, the proportions of a Khaite sweater, the recent Ed Ruscha exhibit at MoMA or a premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival,” says John. In the living room of longtime clients’ year-round vacation home in Maine, the design duo — adept at rich and refined interiors for residential, commercial and hospitality projects alike — took cues from the earthy tones of a dynamic 1989 artwork by Jannis Kounellis. The piece hangs above a sectional sofa in a rich chocolate hue and complements the dark base of the marble-topped coffee table by the 1970s Dutch designer Jan Vlug and the wood-and-leather-framed Brazilian lounge chairs. “The furniture, a balanced mix of vintage, custom and contemporary, anchors the space,” Christine says, “with lighter tones relating to the bright outdoors and unobstructed water views.” To accentuate the natural daylight and add a lustrous glow at night, the designers added a brutalist bronze table lamp by Allegra Hicks, perched on a Federico Peri stone table from Nilufar; a brass storage box by Gabriella Crespi from Donzella; and two showstopping Orbitale brass chandeliers by Silvio Piattelli that they found on 1stDibs.
