Showroom Manager

We are seeking a Showroom Manager to build and manage the 1stdibs gallery of the future.  We’ve recently leased over 40,000 square feet in West Chelsea that we are developing into - a flagship location that will showcase more than 50 of 1stdibs’ most exciting dealers and foster deeper relationships with the Trade, their clients, and our dealer community.

As part of the opening team, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the physical design and the technology roadmap to create an integrated, omni-channel experience that connects the Gallery and our website.  You will be responsible for all facets of the business once the Gallery opens its doors.

We are looking for someone who has both passion and knowledge for design and home furnishings, as well as ideally having experience working with the Trade.  As the first hire in the Gallery, you will be responsible for building out a world-class team and developing the standard operating procedures necessary to deliver a luxury buying experience.  Additionally, you’ll be working closely with the representatives of the 50+ brands and dealers who will be showcased in the gallery.

You’ll have the opportunity to lead a team, set sales strategy , and own the Gallery’s business day-to-day. To be successful, you need to have well-rounded luxury retail management skills, a proven track record as a sales leader, strong operational and project management skills and a burning drive to see your team and the Gallery succeed. In return, you will help create something totally unique, and work with -- and learn from -- some of the most passionate, driven and creative people assembled under one roof.

 

What you’ll do

  • Hire, develop, lead and motivate a team through consistent coaching, feedback and training
  • Drive sales and service through team management, including goal-setting, coaching, training, accountability and recognition
  • Manage performance issues of sales team members
  • Ensure the Gallery represents the best-in-design by utilizing visual directives, presentation and general housekeeping standards
  • Create and maintain Gallery procedures in order to maximize profit and manage expense control goals (e.g., scheduling, managing shipments, controllable expenses and supplies)
  • Maintain a positive and productive work environment
  • Liaise with the Trade community within the showroom, to ensure they have the best items within their space and support with the renewal process
  • Build constructive  working relationships with 1stdibs teams including Trade, Seller Relations, Logistics and Customer Service, in order to develop best practices and strategies to grow the business

What you’ll bring

  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of retail management experience, a proven track record of successful leadership and an in-depth knowledge of the retail industry
  • Excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal communication skills, with strong emphasis on listening; demonstrated people management skills and the ability to thrive in a team environment
  • A sense of personal style, polished appearance, refined taste and a discerning eye for luxury
  • Demonstrated design skills and a passion for the design profession
  • Ability to adhere to high personal performance standards; integrity, business ethics and the desire and ability to continuously learn
  • Knack for building relationships and trust with direct reports, peers and Gallery clients
  • Financial literacy, business acumen and ability to manage budgetary responsibilities
  • Experience working in a fast paced environment, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude to do whatever it takes to succeed
  • Ability to routinely move objects weighing more than 25 lbs and to understand safety requirements
  • Ability to maneuver effectively around gallery floor, stock room and office
  • Position entails prolonged standing, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, bending and climbing
