Art Nouveau Portrait of Redhaired Lady Watercolor by French Master Brisgard
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower left "G. Brisgard" (Gustave Joseph Marie Brisgand, 1867 - 1944). This stunning portrait of a supposedly young movie star captures the essence of old school glamor in the film industry (perhaps old Hollywood...). Dressed in a beautiful stage gown, she holds an intricately patterned box close to her heart. What treasures could be inside? Perhaps precious jewelry or heartfelt letters from a special someone. Who knows... One thing is certain, this box holds great value to her. In 1993, this painting was entitled “Le Secret”, it was masterly executed in early 20th century in the manner of Pre-Raphaelites with strong flavor of Art Nouveau though. Size app.: 71 x 52.5 cm (roughly 28 x 20.7 in), frame is 94.5 x 75.5 cm (roughly 37.2 x 29.7 in). Appears to be in very good pristine condition with minimal wear to painting (slight discoloration by spots), ready to hang. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 3.6 kg is going to measure 7 kg packed for shipment. Brisgand's, french painter and pastellist. An academic painter, he specialized in portraits of women (pinups) and female nudes. He was the student of Auguste Allongé...

Frans Van Holder, 1881 - 1919, Belgian, 'Portrait Of A Young Woman In White'
Located in Bruges, BE
Frans Van Holder Ixelles 1881 – 1919 Geneva Belgian Painter 'Portrait of a Young Woman in White – The Artist’s Wife' Signature: Signed top left and dated 1906 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: diameter: image size 96 cm, frame size 120,50 cm Biography: Van Holder Frans, born in Brussels in 1881, emerged as a prominent post-Impressionist painter during the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau era. Initially a painter-decorator in his father’s workshop, he contributed to the adornment of Brussels’ bourgeoisie interiors, setting the stage for his alignment with the Art Nouveau movement. Van Holder studied under Alfred Cluysenaar at the Saint-Gilles Academy. His artistic evolution embraced Impressionist principles, influenced by luminosity proponents like Manet and Pissarro. After formal training at the Sint-Gillis Academy and travels through Spain, Italy, and Switzerland, Van Holder returned to Brussels in 1905, joining the esteemed ‘Pour l’Art’ association. Rejecting theoretical constraints, he prioritized harmony in his art, viewing color as a musical composition requiring rhythm and balance. Van Holder’s mastery extended to intimate post-impressionist portraits, notably capturing the Brussels aristocracy like the Wolfers family...

Art Nouveau Vintage French Original "Job" Lithograph Poster by Jules Cheret
Located in Pasadena, CA
A French original lithograph "Job" poster by Jules Cheret picturing an elegant lady from the end of the 19th-century advertising for cigarette paper. It rests in its original gold leaf frame and was edited by Ateliers Cheret. I added the pictures of the matching one that will be featured next week. Jules Chéret, ( 1836-1933), one of the pioneering poster artists of the late 19th century, was quick to realize not only the aesthetic but also the commercial potential of his medium caused by changes in technology and society. After founding his own Paris studio in 1867, Chéret merged text and image in ways that predicted the advent of cartooning with their harmonious integration of elements. The proliferation of the new department stores, patronized by the growing middle class, midwifed the birth of a consumer culture that gave him new markets for his work. Chéret’s posters...

Nature unveiling in front of Science
Located in PARIS, FR
Nature unveiling in front of Science by Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) Bronze sculpture with multiple patina. Signed "E. Barrias" on the side of the base cast by "Susse Frères" (foundry mark and stamp) The model of this statue was commissioned in 1889 to decorate the new medical school in Bordeaux. When he had finished the first version in white marble for the school, Barrias designed a second marble and onyx statue in 1899 for the ceremonial staircase of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers in Paris. France circa 1900 height 58 cm Biography : Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) was a French sculptor . He came from a family of artists. His father was a porcelain painter and his older brother, Felix-Joseph Barrias, a recognized painter. Louis-Ernest Barrias entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1858, he abandoned painting to move towards sculpture under the direction of François Jouffroy. In 1864, he won the Prix de Rome, on the theme of "The Foundation of Marseille", and was engaged on the site of the Paris Opera house. He later produced many sculpted works, most of them in marble. In 1881, Louis-Ernest Barrias was awarded a medal of honor of the fine arts and named knight of the Legion of Honor in 1878, then promoted officer in 1881 and commander in 1900. The artist replaced Auguste Dumont at the Institute in 1884, then succeeded Jules Cavelier as a professor at the School of Fine Arts, where, among his most notable students, there were Victor Ségoffin, Charles Despiau and Paul Landowski.

Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.

A variety of authentic art is available on 1stDibs. Explore art at auction and the 1stDibs NFT art marketplace, too.
