La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work. Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants. By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...

1885 America's Cup Sailing Yachts: Set of 3 Original 19th C. Engravings
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a set of three woodcut engravings produced in 1885 to commemorate the sailing yacht trials competition to determine the team to represent the United States in the America's Cup races off the New Jersey coast in that same year. These three beautiful woodcut engravings are part of a group of six equally attractive prints, all framed identically in gold scrolled frames with pleasing light grey French mats each with a medium grey band. Each frame measures 16.13" x 17.25" x 0.5". See Item Reference #LU117325094852 to view the other three images. These may be purchased individually for $1,075/each, as a set of three for $2,875/3 or as a set of six for $5,575/6. Any number of these engravings would make for a striking display grouping. Three American racing yachts, the Puritan, the Priscilla and the Bedouin, participating in the 1885 America’s Cup trials off the coast of New Jersey are shown in their qualifying races. The Puritan, owned by several members of the Eastern Yacht Club...

Column of Trajan in Rome: A Framed Original 19th C. Etching by Luigi Rossini
Located in Alamo, CA
This early 19th century etching entitled "Veduta dello scavo del Foro Trajano" was created by Luigi Rossini and included in his publication "Le Antichita Romane" (The Rome of Antiquity), published in Rome in 1823. It depicts the historical victory column of Trajan standing amidst the rubble of broken columns that remain around it. The etching is presented in a black wood frame with a light brown outer mat and a dark brown inner mat. There are several frame abrasions. The print and mats are in very good condition. The frame measures 27" high, 29.07" wide and 0.5" deep. The print is framed and matted in the identical style as the another etching of an ancient Roman landmark, the Piazza Navona, which is also listed on 1stdibs, see item # LU117326144172. The pair would make an attractive display grouping of Roman architecture. A discount is available for purchase of the pair of prints. Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) like his predecessors, Giovanni Piranesi (1720–1778) and Giuseppi Vasi (1710-1782), was an architect and artist. Like Piranesi and Vasi, he wanted to glorify the architecture of ancient Rome, which he felt was deteriorating and needed to be documented. Several of the ruins he illustrated have, in fact, since disappeared leaving only his images as a record of their appearance. His images of the grand edifices of the city dramatically depict the power and glory...

Circle of Thomas Girtin, Sheep in a hilly pasture, early English watercolour
Located in Harkstead, GB
A charming rural scene painted in the style of Thomas Girtin with good strong colours. Circle of Thomas Girtin Sheep in a hilly pasture with a farmhouse Signed with initials and dated "AP (18)05' Watercolour, with attractive washline mount 6¾ x 9¾ inches with frame 14 x 17 inches including frame Thomas Girtin was born in London in 1775, the same year as J.M.W. Turner, and died in 1802, at the age of twenty-seven. The art of watercolour was transformed during Girtin's brief life. This was especially marked in landscape watercolours, which grew in scale and ambition. Led by Girtin and Turner, watercolourists abandoned careful stained drawings for a more dramatic style of painting that captured moods and a range of light and weather effects. Not everyone welcomed the rapid technical changes, especially as revolution and war threatened the established political order. For a brief period, however, watercolour painting was the epitome of modern art, and the landscapes of Girtin and Turner were welcomed as a national triumph. Girtin was apprenticed at the age of 14, in the year of the French Revolution, and by the age of 19 he was exhibiting at London's Royal Academy, and producing watercolour landscapes for private patrons. However, unlike Turner, Girtin remained something of an outsider to the art establishment: he did not study at the Academy's schools, and was rumoured to have radical, or even revolutionary sympathies. He also tried to break away from the traditional reliance on the patronage of the wealthy, partly by trying to sell his work on the open market, and partly through two larger projects aimed at a mass audience: a group of twenty printed Views of Paris and an enormous 360 degree panorama of London...

David Roberts (1769 - 1864) Citadel of Sidon - April 28th, 1839 (published 1943) Lithograph with hand-colouring 23 x 35 cm (sheet size 17.5 x 24.5 cm) The Citadel of Sidon, or Sidon Sea Castle, was built by crusaders in the thirteenth century as a fortress of the holy land. This lithograph is part of David Roberts' series of views of the Holy Land, which he produced from sketches made during lengthy tours of the Near East in the 1830s. Egypt was much in vogue at this time, and travellers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt; Roberts was more than happy to produce pictures on this lucrative theme. Breton Courtship - British 19thC exhib art portrait landscape oil painting
By George Sherwood Hunter
Located in London, GB
A stunning 1891 exhibited oil painting by British listed artist George Sherwood Hunter. This is a glorious British Impressionist painting from his travels in Northern France. It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections. Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a fine Barbizon gilt gallery frame, 40 inches by 30 inches framed. Gallery condition. George Sherwood Hunter (1846-1914) - was born in Aberdeen in Scortland on 30 May 1846. He first visited Newlyn in the 1890s, staying at Belle View in 1897. In 1902 he settled at the Malt House, Newlyn, with his wife Constance. Hunter had a studio in Bateman’s Meadow, where the Forbes School of Painting was situated, and Hunter assisted with tuition at the School in its early days. Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.
