"Untitled 1" Painting 102" x 102" inch by GUELA TSOULADZE
Located in Culver City, CA
"Untitled 1" Painting 102" x 102" inch by GUELA TSOULADZE Oil painting on oilcloth canvases. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Nomad from birth, Guela Tsouladzé was born on November 8, 1959 in Tbilisi, Georgia, from a French mother and a Georgian father. His father was one of the first Georgian psychanalyst; but working with the conscient and subconscient of the homo sovieticus was a disputed occupation, criticized by the soviet ideology. Therefore, it required a significant dose of audacity; it’s in this context of insubordination and freedom, that Guela tirelessly repeats that he will be an artist, without ever having painted anything. The father thus commissioned his first work: a black dot on the ceiling of his office, which his patients would fix during the sessions. The gateway to hypnosis, and the artist’s future signature. Perhaps Guela's innate sense of daring and escapism comes from there; these two themes are till today reflected in his works. Guela grows up in a surreal artistic universe, between France and Georgia, inspired in particular by Pirosmani, the brothers Zdanevitch and Salvador Dali, whom he met shortly before his death in 1981 at Portiligat Cadaques, and surrounded by the filmmaker Paradjanov, a friend of the Tsouladze family. He begins his studies at the Fine Arts on Tbilisi in 1977, but the ultimate horizon is Paris. He joins the Art Décoratifs from 1980 to 1983 and then the Beaux-Arts from 1983 to 1985. He becomes the assistant of Christian Boltanski, whom he follows from exhibition to exhibition. In France, the 80s are colorful years, wild like a Fauvist painting. Art comes out of museums and gives birth to the free figuration, an elusive movement, which was slowly taking shape in the lethargy of the Beaux-Arts. Pop culture, in its spontaneity and in its lack of self-control, takes over everything and breaks down all codes, groups and borders. Art is free from all constraints and analysis. Guela is there at the right time, in the right place, with the right people. The Holy Trinity, as he likes to repeat. These crazy years are an ecstatic playground for his artistic instincts. Guela paints on everything: papers, canvases or newspapers. His grand formats are at the scale of his silhouette; he leaves the Beaux-Art and joins the first squats in the nineteenth arrondissement of Paris, notably the Quai de Seine workshop, which he shares with Remy Blanchard and Vincent Scali. These are the years of Ben, of the Di Rosa brothers, of Robert Combas and François Boisrond. Art for everyone, and party for all. Guela follows his intuitions to Ibiza and Barcelona from 1987 to 1993, where he works at the Casa Caritad, which will later become the city's Museum of Modern Art. This colorful and collective delight contrasts with the dark anxieties of our time. Contrary to the widespread dystopia, it was then the utopia that reigned! New York is its epicenter, shaped by Basquiat and Keith Haring. Guela lives there from 1993 to 1998, including several years at the legendary Chelsea Hotel, of which he covers the walls and furniture with Georgian calligraphy. This is where his simplistic, black, and loving figures were born, later becoming his trademark and one of the symbols of Batumi. It was precisely at the end of the 90s that his desire to build bridges between his native country and France became deeper. The Soviet Union died in a burst of freedom, and the Georgians slowly come out of a fratricidal war, fueled by Russia. Georgia needs love, so Guela replaces the flag’s crosses with hearts, following the 2003 Rose Revolution. Since then, convinced that art is the answer to the stress that is still plaguing Georgia, Guela multiplies projects for exhibitions, partnerships, festivals and art centers. He brings several French artists to the Garikula Residency, including Jean Dupuy...

Extension - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this dynamic new work by Milly Ritsvedt, bold vertical bands of pure colour run the length of the painting. As always, Ristvedt’s choice of colours in this hard-edged piece is masterful—turquoise, deep pink, blue and bright yellow. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “The paintings of the past two or three years explore questions of form, colour and process that arise out of earlier works.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...

Fire Yellow Grid - rich, warm, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas

A checkerboard of dynamic colour—this abstract work by master colourist Milly Ristvedt immediately engages the viewer. A classic grid pattern accentuates the interplay of light and dark colours—black, navy, red, aubergine and white highlighted by a sunny yellow. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s abstract paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “Colour has been central to my explorations in painting from the beginning.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. Master Colourist Milly Ristvedt is playing with the classic grid pattern in this fun abstract painting. Geometric shapes—squares, rectangles, and fine lines in fresh, modern colours—orange, yellow, turquoise, green, purple, and royal blue appear to float against the celery green backdrop. 1969 psychedelic poster created by Lee Conklin for It's a Beautiful Day and Aum
Located in PARIS, FR
Beautiful 1969 psychedelic poster created by Lee Conklin for It's a Beautiful Day and the blues-rock ephemeral Aum at the Fillmore West. Lee Conklin is an artist best known for his psychedelic posters from the late 1960s and particularly for his iconic cover for Santana's first album. At the time, photography was the basis of advertising, while psychedelic graphics were done by hand and were mostly based on an illustration concept. The posters of this movement claim a new aesthetic: the flashy and warm colors, the shapes and moving typography and the density of the motif that invades the space translate the psychedelic vision, often associated with the taking of substances such as LSD. Photography, Drawings, Prints, Sculptures and Paintings for Sale

Whether growing your current fine art collection or taking the first steps on that journey, you will find an extensive range of original photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, paintings and more on 1stDibs.

Visual art is among the oldest forms of expression, and it has been evolving for centuries. Beautiful objects can provide a window to the past or insight into our current time. Art collecting enhances daily life through the presence of meaningful work. It displays an appreciation for culture, whether a print by Elizabeth Catlett channeling social change or a narrative quilt by Faith Ringgold.

Contemporary art has lured more initiates to collecting than almost any other category, with notable artists including Yayoi Kusama, Marc Chagall, Kehinde Wiley and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Navigating the waiting lists for the next Marlene Dumas, Jeff Koons or Jasper Johns has become competitive.

When you’re living with art, particularly as people more often work from home and enjoy their spaces, it’s important to choose art that resonates with you. While the richness of art with its many movements, styles and histories can be overwhelming, the key is to identify what is appealing and inspiring. Artwork can play with the surrounding color of a room, creating a layered approach. The dynamic shapes and sizes of sculptures can set different moods, such as a bronze by Miguel Guía on a mantel or an Alexander Calder mobile suspended over a table. A wall of art can evoke emotions in an interior while showing off your tastes and interests. A salon-style wall mixing eclectic pieces like landscape paintings with charcoal drawings is a unique way to transform a space and show off a collection.

For art meditating on the subconscious, investigate Surrealists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Explore Pop art and its leading artists such as Andy Warhol, Rosalyn Drexler and Keith Haring for bright and bold colors. Not only did these artists question art itself, but also how we perceive society. Similarly, 20th-century photography and abstract painting reconsidered the intent of art.

Abstract Expressionists like Helen Frankenthaler and Lee Krasner and Color Field artists including Sam Gilliam broke from conventional ideas of painting, while Op artists such as Yaacov Agam embraced visual trickery and kinetic movement. Novel visuals are also integral to contemporary work influenced by street art, such as sculptures and prints by KAWS.

Realist portraiture is a global tradition reflecting on what makes us human. This is reflected in the work of Slim Aarons, an American photographer whose images are at once candid and polished and appeared in Holiday magazine and elsewhere. Innovative artists Mickalene Thomas and Kerry James Marshall are now offering new perspectives on the form.

Collecting art is a rewarding, lifelong pursuit that can help connect you with the creative ways historic, modern and contemporary artists have engaged with the world. For more tips on piecing together an art collection, see our guide to buying and displaying art.

A variety of authentic art is available on 1stDibs. Explore art at auction and the 1stDibs NFT art marketplace, too.
