Abstract Painting in Los Angeles, by David Pagel for Gallery Magazine, June 2017 featuring Dion Johnson: “Every square inch of every painting Johnson has made over the last two years has been composed to accentuate and intensify the physical shifts our bodies and minds feel as they jump from one space to another, one color to another, one scale to another, one pattern to another. Its something like shifting gears in a high-performance automobile, only smoother and swifter and, when you stand back and take in the complex rhythms that Johnson has orchestrated, defined by a kind of simultaneity that is not possible in race cars, whose engines have gears that must be moved through sequentially. Too ambitious and sophisticated for such linear machinations, Johnson’s HD paintings- particularly his wall-size whoppers – set your eyes free to careen and to ricochet, to slide and to glide, to slip and to shimmy, every which way, all at once. The dance is not random. But you have to be pretty quick on your feet – and intellectually athletic – to keep up with the freewheeling festivities his paintings unleash.” Like his predecessor, John McLaughlin, Dion Johnson has found a bridge between an Eastern sensibility and Western iconography. This appears primarily in his spatial relationships; dense color fields and gradient atmospheres suggest skies, water, or glowing city nights. While one could sense a familiarity with Turrell environments, Johnson's scale is far more intimate: a feeling of some internal vision, or steep vista, or perhaps as an abstract thangka. It is the play of solid color fields and ambient gradations, which make these works a melding of the natural, architectural and cinematic worlds. Dion Johnson, Time Traveller, 2017, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 120 inches was included in the recent solo exhibition Color Chords at the Werkarts downtown Los Angeles Arts District space on Santa Fe. Ave. The piece is in excellent condition. Johnson is represented by Western Project, Los Angeles, California; Holly Johnson Gallery, Dallas, Texas; and Bentley Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona. He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, California and BFA from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Dion Johnson has always had a keen interest in color, especially in Paul Klee's polyphonic approach; of simultaneous blocks of colors producing a kind of rhythm and harmony, a musicality of time, fluctuation, and sensation. It is Johnson's shapes and compositions, which set up rhythms and visual chords. His progressive forms have a kind of linear sense, but more importantly a wholeness, much like the beginning of a cool morning walk which ends in the mid day sun; the path and the perception are one.
