Louise Laplante
Boy To Man: The Young Speaker (Vintage collage with Fedora & Boots Silhouette)

2014

About the Item

chalk on vintage, collaged paper artwork measures 31 x 36 inches Floated in Natural Wood Frame measuring 35.5 x 40 x 1 inches with non-reflective glass This work on paper is being offered by Carrie Haddad Gallery, located in Hudson, NY Graphic depictions of a fedora hat and manly boots with black chalk on vintage book pages. A contemporary spin on a coming of age story. Louise Laplante introduces new collages made with antique paper from found books. Each work contains a story often about women, botany, or animals that is inspired by the pages they're built upon. In the tradition of scrapbooks or memory boxes, the work is also riddled with personal references which are blurred with whitewash “the way memories are blurred by distance” and finally encased by a surface of encaustic. Laplante’s career as a head university librarian further explains her love of books and ephemera. Artist Statement: Biography is an interesting word and can mean many things, from chronological history, a series of significant “impact” dates or events to a more free flow blend of the past and its relevancy to the present. Personally, my history is heavily affected by my status as a second generation American of French Canadian descent growing up close to the Quebec border. The easy passage from “old world” to “new world” is unique to those in states abutting the “old country” and results in the blending of the old and new. Stories from my family’s past influenced my parents’ choices in raising their children. These choices still resonate with me. As an artist, this blending of old world and new, history and present, gradually became the wellspring for my work. Studying art at the Art Institute of Boston and College of New Rochelle as an undergraduate, and SUNY Albany as a graduate student I did as all students do, searched for my voice, trying styles, media and approaches. This continued into my early years as an artist. The work I did then, valuable as a learning experience has since been destroyed as it served its purpose. I began to mine my past, to use the remnants of the past, to recognize its’ relevant to the present and its richness in imagery.

Edmund D. Kinzinger was born in 1888, to an upper-middle class family in Pforzhein, Germany. In Munich he studied at the Kirr Schule and the Staatliche Akademie, and pursued graduate studies at the Academie Modern, Paris. Before serving in the German Army, Kinzinger was a master student of Adolph Holzel at the Staatcliche Akademie, Stuttgart; he returned to study under Henrich Waldschmidt after nearly five years of artillery service. Several of Kinzinger’s fellow students in Germany, such as Johannes Itten, would go on to be associated with the Bauhaus school. Coming into contact with all manner of artistic influences in Europe after World War One, Kinzinger’s work may be viewed as a “synthesis” of modernist styles. The influences of Abstract Expressionist, Cubist, and Futurist styles in Kinzinger’s work at this time are symptomatic of his contact with the likes of Hans Hofmann, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Archipenko.
