Nancy Berlin was born in New York City. After graduating from Barnard College, Berlin received her MA in painting and printmaking from Hunter College. She has received grants for her drawings from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Berkshire Taconic Foundation. She has had residencies at the American Academy in Rome, at Centrum in Port Townsend, Washington, and at the New Pacific Studio in Mt. Bruce, New Zealand. Her work is in the collections of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, the Boston Public Library and many corporate and private collections. She has exhibited her drawings, prints and paintings in one-person and group shows at galleries she has been affiliated with in New York City, Boston, Seattle and Charleston, West Virginia. She currently lives and works most of the year in Truro, Massachusetts. Her work has long been concerned with mapping change.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
For many years I have been trying to learn the art of birdwatching, and have often been frustrated by glimpsing colors and forms at the periphery of my visual field. I try to recollect these quick flashes of color and form and interweave them into a composite, which may include one or several species.
Unlike earlier series of mine, where I mourn or despair the disappearance of species of flora and fauna, and the environments in which they thrive, with this work I celebrate what I can see.
I see the world in flux and in my other recent drawings and paintings I try to show the conflict between stasis and change; between the unexpected, unplanned, unforeseen and the order and structure that appears and disappears.
I manipulate paper and paint to literally tear down and build up the surfaces, exposing what has been and, with line and geometry, evolving to a new equilibrium.
My work has long explored systems of thought and knowledge and has used layering of imagery, line and color to investigate subjects as diverse as cartography, scientific classification, urban architecture and environmental change.'

- Larry Zox "Teal Top" Drawing, 1966By Larry ZoxLocated in Toronto, OntarioLarry Zox (1937-2006) was a central figure in the evolution of 20th century abstraction in America. Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre. Zox moved to New York City and established his reputation by the mid 1960's. His studio was located on 20th Street and he was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz artists, bikers, and boxers. Zox was one of the most successful practitioners of hard-edge or geometric abstraction and not surprisingly was championed by Frank Stella, amongst others. By the mid 1960's, Zox arrived at his most recognized style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns, which were often realized on raw canvas. Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960's and early 1970's are arguably the most recognizable works from his oeuvre. Fittingly he had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1973, that focused on such work. Today, numerous museums including the Whitney, the MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan all have examples of his work from this era in their permanent collections. While Zox is not directly associated with the Op Art movement, many of his works by nature of their patterns and colors create visual illusions in dimensionality. In "Mosaic" the kelly green band that intersect the composition helps give the overall work an appearance of a slanted stair. Frequently the artist seems to be inviting the viewer to find pattern within the work. In "Mosaic" we have both areas of synergy and dissonance. Can you find them? Questions about this piece?
