'BURNING BRIGHT MY NEW TOOLS', 2020 Colour pencil, spray paint and graphite on handmade paper Signed and dated 42 x 29 cm Artist Rita Evans’s imaginative practice is an admixture of autonomous practice, creative improvisation and an interest in the haptic process of making objects. Evans composes her enigmatically beautiful drawings in color pencil, graphite, felt tip or biro pens as well as spray paint on handmade paper. A luminous delicacy in the treatment of pigment and line is paired with both abstraction and the surreal. Indeed, the strange compelling Martian landscapes of Yves Tanguy are recalled, in the sense that we have come upon an alternative universe made up of strange shapes and echo of sound and music. Aqueous biomorphic forms populate quiet backgrounds. Beneath the colours we see the armature of sounds plotted out as sculptural diagrams and points. As well, Evans’s remarkable drawings have a lyrical and geometric attention to line that recalls the work of Paul Klee. Like the modernist master, Evans’s process is linked to the pictorial expression of music, and her work emerges directly from or in response to her own work as a musician and collaborative performer. Fascinated “by the relationship between the shapes of the sound making objects and the ‘shapes’ of the sounds they make” Evans builds her own sculpture-instruments through an improvisational process which is, in turn, mirrored in her drawing practice. Evans shares that she often begins with diagramming and sketching ideas for new playable instrument-sculptures and performance realms, “translated for imaginary spaces as drawings.” This can also happen in the inverse as an expression of a performance and the forms and sounds that emerged from these collaborative acts. While the projects are linked, it is a symbiotic relationship. By responding to unique elements, moments, tones and forms, the drawing takes on a different role depending on the project – preparatory work, documentation and or stand-alone artworks. If the artist has a metaphor for these interrelationships and her process, it is the title of her recent film ‘Coil of Days’. “A coil winds around its centre, moving parallel to what happened previously, but grows on from it; with each cycle it becomes larger in scope, another layer is added. It’s a very powerful image of things joining forces and gathering over time, but also ready to spring apart.” In terms of composing her images, Evans shares: “I hold several characters in my mind that have their own quirks, colours and forms (cones, shadows, spheres, lines, nets, blankets), each with their own set of parameters. These could be seen as the different instruments in an orchestra, their tones and timbres interact together in layers, where at any one moment a singular instrument might become more audible than the others, then fade down back into the overall sound. I draw to see how the characters play out in this fluid way on the page; and how their relationships play out and modulate together over time as an expression of two or more parts.” Other inspirations include the world of aquatic forms – a space where a newly imagined “way of being” offers models for form as we see in the Aqueous Spine and Multi Breath Poly Pipe Instruments which appear as if creatures replete with bodies constructed of porous material and pipes. These shapes metamorphosize in drawings that echo the jelly like composition of aquatic bodies. As well, Evans notes an interest in the music of composer Éliane Radigue whose electronic sounds seem to the artist to be “slow moving organic forms, carefully composed over a long period of time to slowly unfurl in different ways. The waveform is itself a line, the action of folding and unfolding opening and closing to make different sounds, and envelopes to begin and end sounds in a different way or transition from one to another. This work is more than just a sound or a vision.” It is the beauty of this folding and unfolding that is expressed in Evans’ atmospheric drawings and innovative objects. Evans’s treatment of sculptural form in the drawings deepens the complexity of her work, adding an element of abstraction and contemplation reflecting in turn, the relationship between sound and the visual world as she expresses so poetically “the shape of sound.” Rosa JH Berland
