About

Watercolor and gouache on acid free rag paper

William Oberheiser-Batista was born in Havana Cuba in 1955 to parents of German-Irish and Cuban heritage. Following the Cuban Revolution, his family immigrated to the Bahamas, San Juan P.R, and later the United States where he received a BFA at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon in 1981. William’s oil and mixed media paintings, featuring the classic concept of a figure in a landscape with a narrative, were showcased at the San Juan Biennial and the Museo Del Indio, Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in San Juan. He was represented by the Luigi Marrozzini Gallery in San Juan. During the 1990s Oberheiser moved to South Florida where he was represented by the Ann Jaffee Gallery in Bal Harbor, Florida. He also maintained an artist residency at the Bakehouse Complex in Miami and worked in the curatorial departments of the Miami Art Museum and the Bass Art Museum.

Drawn from his tropical origins, William’s work is a cultural mix versed in narrative tradition and the language of abstraction, blending diverse cultural traditions while celebrating the cosmic beauty and perfection of the universe. His inspiration stems from the narrative tendencies found in Caribbean and Latin American Art, influences from the New York School, Pop Art, LA artists and the Italian Transavantegarde. Surfers are a recurrent image in Oberheiser’s work, representing a parallel existence with the ideal of the artist, a rigorous discipline devoted to personal freedom and expression, outside of materialistic pursuits.

His current work includes larger scale paperworks of bold colors and graphic elements, with focus on a global intent rather than a specific place. The geographic backdrops are rich in associations and references. Each shape/map speaks a language of its history, past and present such as Greece, the South China Sea, the Sea of Japan and the Caribbean basin. A map of Greece recalls the Hellenistic World but today it is an image of political ferment and immigration. The South China Sea is a jigsaw puzzle of geopolitical activity.
A lifetime of travel and growing up in diverse geographic locations has given this artist the gift of being an insider with the detachment and wonder to appreciate diverse cultures. In our current world preoccupied with partisanship and tribalism, the evolution of this artist’s work strives to show that there are possibilities for a seamless and joyful fusion of global cultures where the sum, is greater than the parts.
