Louis Henry Dupray or Henri Dupray , born on 3 november 1841 in Sedan, died on 17 april 1909 in Paris, was a painter, engraver and illustrator. He is known mainly for his history paintings and more particularly of military scenes . Initially intended for a military career, Henri-Louis Dupray was forced, following a horseback accident, to give up this route. His interest in art developed, particularly through technical drawing, and he quickly became a pupil of thepainters Léon Cogniet and Isidore Pils at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. From the start of his artistic career, Dupray specialized in the representation of military subjects, only very occasionally devoting himself to the elaboration of portraits. From 1863, he exhibited regularly at the Salon and, from 1865, became a member of the society of aquafortists . The painter Édouard Manet belonged to his circle of friends. Scenes from the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars predominated in Dupray's work until 1870, when more and more drawings, paintings and illustrations were added relating to the Franco-German War of 1870. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1878. In addition to oil paintings , Dupray produced various etchings during his life ( Drum School, La Patrouille, Brigadier, etc.). His drawings appeared several times in the French magazine Le Courrier and he is repeatedly entrusted with the role of book illustrator for various authors such as Alfred de Vigny , Henri Dupont-Delporte or Victor Hugo.

  • Attributed to Francesco Casanova (1727-1803), A Mamluk fighting , watercolor
    By Francesco Giuseppe Casanova
    Located in Paris, FR
Attributed to Francesco Casanova (1727-1803), A Mamluk fighting on his horse, watercolor and ink on paper 35 x 26 cm In quite good condition : yellowed by time as visible on the photographs. Vintage frame with little damages (see photographs please), the mat and the back have been recently changed. 54 x 44 cm The first indication about attribution was given by the name indicated on the vintage frame with what could look as a mistake about the date of death of the artist, if the exact date of Francesco Casanova'death was not known with certainty. It's estimated he died at the beginning of the 19th century, Maybe in 1803, 1805 or as late as 1807. The style and execution are really close to the artist's known compositions, the way he draws the horse for example. Francesco Giuseppe Casanova was an Italian painter who specialised in battle scenes. His older brother was Giacomo Casanova, the famous adventurer, and his younger brother was Giovanni Casanova; also a well-known painter. He was born in London, and returned to Venice when he was still young, upon his brother Giovanni's advice, he went to Paris and became an apprentice of Charles Parrocel. As a result of favourable criticism from Denis Diderot, he began to receive commissions from the aristocracy. His fame soon spread eastward and he received commissions from Catherine the Great for the Hermitage, beginning in 1768. Two years later, he produced his four famous "disaster paintings...

  • Gentlemen at the Races, Point to Pointing
    By Sir Alfred James Munnings
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Early 20th century watercolour of a gentleman on horseback with other riders in the background apparently signed or titled 'Count A de Monthaus'. Signed or titled bottom left. Presented in fine period gilt frame under glass. The artist has captured a moment of pause, the gentlemen rider in his fine clothes and bowler hat regarding his surroundings as his fellow riders continue the chase behind him, possibly a 'point to point'. Monthaus has captured the stance of the standing horse as well as the movement of the other horses. He has used white to give light and definition to the costume of the rider and the background. A lovely atmospheric and dynamic watercolour very much of its period and in the spirit of equine portraiture made famous by the likes of Sir Alfred Munnings. Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO PRA RI (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War...

  • Antique Horse Study; Legs and Rumps, 1838" Wouterus Verschuur (Dutch, 1812-1874)
    Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique Horse Study "Legs and Rumps, 1838" Wouterus Verschuur l (Dutch, 1812-1874) Pencil on paper Signed and Dated "W Verschuur 1838" 10 x 6 1/2 (17 1/2 x 14 frame) inches In his time Wouterus Verschuur was an acclaimed and celebrated painter of horses. Through careful observation he learned to capture their physique and movement to perfection. As a true-born romanticist he was also interested in their character, thereby painting powerful carthorses in their stable, thoroughbred saddled horses during an afternoon ride or harnessed horses in action. He was born to an Amsterdam jeweler and received his training from the landscape and cattle painters Pieter Gerardus van Os and Cornelis Steffelaar. As part of this education Verschuur had to copy works by the 17th century painter Philips Wouwerman. Like Wouwerman, Verschuur's subjects consist mostly of stable scenes, landscapes with horses and coastal landscape. These works reflect the enduring influence of the northern Baroque masters on nineteenth century art, revealing the artist's close study of his Dutch and Flemish predecessors harking back to Peter Paul Rubens. Showing talent from a very early age, at 15 Verschuur had a painting exhibited at the "Exhibition of Living Masters" at Amsterdam in 1828. In 1832 and 1833 he won the gold medal at the annual exhibition at Felix Meritis. In 1833 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. In 1839 he joined the artists' society, Arti et Amicitiae. His reputation was also considerable abroad. He was often featured in the annual exhibitions which travelled the large European cities at that time. In 1855 Napoleon III purchased one of his paintings at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Verschuur horse revels in its physicality, like a quintessential Baroque horse...
