"Whale in a Sea of Symbols, " Drawing on Handmade Paper by Miguel Castro Leñero

1991

About the Item

"Whale in a Sea of Symbols" is an original ink and charcoal on handmade amate paper by Miguel Castro Leñero. The artist initialed the piece lower right. This piece features an abstracted whale floating through space with abstract symbols. 23 3/8" x 15 3/4" Elegant and elementary compositions of a reduced chromatic sense, sensual surfaces and a magisterial treatment of the painting define to the Mexican artist Miguel Castro Leñero like one of the main painters of their generation. How he said to Mario Kaim Palaces, Miguel Castro Leñero nourishes his plastic universe with elaborated icons or, taking control of graphical representations of animals, clouds, tools or plants that find in documents and books of diverse origin. This “eager hunter for representations of the things of the world” is reducing to the images to his more elementary necessity of representation, approaching the archetype that resides in the origins, the place from where is possible to extend the apparent chaos that reigns in the surface and to show itself to the order that produces it. Castro Leñero has exposed in galleries and museums around the world. In the City of Mexico its work can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Rufino Tamayo, the Museum of Art Cheek Gil and in center Cultural Contemporary Art. Also it is in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca, the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey. He is winning of numerous prizes including the Biennials of Ibero-America and Painting Rufino Tamayo among others.

Judith Brown (December 17, 1931 – May 11, 1992) was a dancer and a sculptor who was drawn to images of the body in motion and its effect on the cloth surrounding it. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. SWAN IN LOVE (TEOREMA 50), 2012  ink, watercolor, airbrush paint, graphite on paper  37.5 x 52 inches / 952 x 1320 mm unframed Christina McPhee’s expansive abstract paintings, drawings, photographs, and videos test or query how can we know, and who is we? Moving from within a matrix of measurement, observation and contingent effects, her work resists characterization as product, and continually accesses fields outside itself. For her, process equals trial. Her work emulates potential forms of life, in various systems and territories, from a perspective of the non-self– a world beyond identity. McPhee’s dynamic, performative, physical engagement with materials, in both her analogue and digital works, is a seduction into surface-skidding calligraphic gestures and mark-making. The tactics of living are in subterfuge, like the ‘dazzle ships...
