About the Item

Sunil Das - Early Horses X - 34 x 20.75 inches (unframed size) Charcoal on paper ( Framed & Delivered ) Sunil Das was one of India's most important postmodernist painters and rose to prominence through his drawings of horses. He captured their relentless temperament in a series of series of short flowing lines that seem to arrest them in motion. He first gained prominence with his horse paintings; he says he has painted over 7,000 horses between 1950-60! Sunil Das’s images of the horses at the stable of Calcutta’s Mounted Police, where the artist spent his time observing and sketching them. His flawless drawings capture the speed, power and energy of the animals. They became symbolic of the energy, aggression and power of modern times and of his own untamed youthful spirit and a sense of liberation. Sunil Das (1939-2015) was a Master Modern Indian Artist from Bengal. Extremely successful right from his college days, Sunil Das has been extremely well lauded by art critics, the press, artists and the art and culture glitterati across the world. Sunil das was the youngest artist to have won the National Award - The Taj Shiromani Kala Puraskar Recipient of the much coveted Govt. of India's 4th Highest Civilian Award : The PadmaShree (2014) Highly talented Sunil Das has done shows all across the world, got fame as early as while he was still in college, youngest recipient of the Lalit Kala Academy Awards and received a scholarship to study at L’Ecole Nationale Superior des Beaux arts, Paris. " There are painters who transform the Sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who, with the help of their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into Sun" - Pablo Picasso. Sunil Das was exactly one such artist. Style : Sunil Das' style of work is very original and shows no specific influence. He had risen to fame like MF Hussain with his famous paintings of horses, to the extent that he was nicknamed 'Ghora Das' ( Hindi which means Horse Das). Like Hussain, Sunil Das was inspired by the force and strength of the moving horse. The horses and the bull ( inspired from his visit to Spain and witnessing the Bull Fighting ) have appeared more than 7000 times in Das’s works. He has otherwise painted haunting pictures of women thereby revealing the dark side of people who are otherwise considered beautiful. His works on the Red Light of Kolkata, was also much lauded and brings about an important social message through his works. Das's main mediums could easily be Oil On Canvas, His Stimulating and Stirring works in Mixed Media, Conte, Charcoal, Serigraphy, Wood Works, Sculptures. Whatever medium he worked on, he effortlessly mastered. Not one to be stuck to one style, Das experimented and worked on various series and mediums. By Prashant Salvi
    Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Prashant Salvi Leap, Watercolour, Acrylic, Charcoal on Paper 22 x 30 inches, 2016 (shipped in a roll form) "I have built my career on surrealist,anatomical/botanical fantasies; beautifully rendered yet sometimes haunting and gruesome, void of irony and done with absolute sincerity. My work builds meaning primarily by exploring the unbridgeable difference between animals and people. A proactive imagery of humans and animals suggests an investigation of linguistics, the natural sciences and human sociology all in respect to the parallel universe of other species alongside us. I use a seemingly detached abstraction as a counter-point, tomy- stylised fabrications of sexual desire"- Prashant Salvi An undercurrent of eroticism, viewed with a steady detachment often can be part of Salvi's works, morphing human and animal forms and throwing psychological riddles challenging the viewer to decide where life begins or ends. Salvi's watercolours with its technical virtuosity turn images from nature to a surrealistic dance of survival. The works are challenging, complex and magically real and acknowledge life’s gentleness and aggressiveness in unison. While nature’s logic could be used to argue the very existence of an omnipotent creator, Salvi, paradoxically suggests ambiguity to life's bigger and deeper questions; answers of which he feels don't come in neat packages.
