"Art Deco Bird #688, " Color Crayon Drawing stamped signature Sylvia Spicuzza

1950

About the Item

"Art Deco Bird #688" is an original color crayon drawing by Sylvia Spicuzza. The artist stamped her signature in the lower left. This piece depicts an abstracted bird and biomorphic shapes in blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown. 11" x 15" art 20" x 23 7/8" frame Born in 1908, Sylvia Spicuzza was the daughter of noted painter Francesco Spicuzza. She received her MFA from Northwestern University. Sylvia devoted herself to teaching art to the students of Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood, WI. During this time Sylvia produced a magnificent body of work that was undiscovered until her death. Sylvia's work is rich, diverse and fascinating collection of drawings, watercolors and prints from the 1920's to the 1990's. Her style ranges from early figurative drawings to regionalism, art deco, lyrical abstractions of every conceivable subject (both real and imagined), as well as figurative paintings that reflect the work of Picasso and Ernest Max in the 1930's and 1940's. Biomorphic and organic, Modernist images are presented with Sylvia Spicuzza's own unique sense of style, humor and fantasy. Spicuzza died in 1998.

  • "The Drowning of Brother Tony, " Original Pastel Drawing signed
    By Della Wells
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"The Drowning of Brother Tony" is an original pastel drawing on paper by Della Wells. The artist signed the piece in the lower right. In this pastel, an alligator-like creature with an African American child's head thrashes about in the water, upsetting the tiny boat pictured at left and causing the black figure on the lower right to drown. Another female black figure, straddling the alligator's tail, attempts to save Tony, but to no avail. Two open eyes appear in the picture: the alligator seems to clutch one and the other appears on the boat's sail. The alligator holds a pice of melon in his mouth and colorful fish populate the water and sky. Alligators reference Jim Crow caricatures in which black children are chased and eaten by alligators. The alligators are menacing and point to a deeply racist pictorial and real world. The eye represents the all-seeing eye of God...
