Art Deco Nude – 20-08-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

About the Item

Third One This drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 20-08-22’ is the third one in a row inspired by a Walter Bird photograph. However, after the last graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 17-08-22’ I felt it was time to vary in style again. Strange how my inner urge works that way. So, straigtness instead of roundistic shapes. With both I have the intention to suggest roundness in shapes though. Perhaps my Roundism variations only get a bit more decorative. Maybe that’s is why I like to change. I don’t want Roundism to become over-zealously and explode into sheer exuberance. It could only lead to a collapse under its increased pumped up mass like a star becomes a black hole. 1938 In my last statement I already mentioned I was going to do another picture by Bird’s. There also was a different reason to do so. I recognized the model in the reference picture. She was the same I used for my oil painting ‘Loving the Alien (2011) (sold)’, sitting at the same cube. Back then I didn’t take notice. Consequently that also must be Walter Bird’s picture, even though the title to the picture suggests it’s from 1938. I always thought it was a contemporary photograph because it looks so modern. Immediately I have my oil painting ‘Homage to Alma Tadema – 02-08-22’ in mind. The reference picture from that one also looked very modern, as if taken yesterday. Could it be that all great works of art keep on looking contemporary? They convey beauty as infinity. Composition Being the photograph as it is, perfect, it seemed impossible to add something. Of course the model is perfect as such, being slender and well proportioned. It is exactly that I set out to put the stress on. Hence the vertical and the emphasis on the feet and hand in straight planes. I did a bit of elaboration of facial features because those were a bit too dark in his photo. It also counterbalance the impressive feet. Just Another Artistic Motif This graphite pencil drawing ˜Venus Lamenting “ 13-01-23 is a special one. It is an indictment of prudishness. My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why. Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. I wanted only mildly distracting or diffuse the viewer’s attention. This way I found a perfect balance. Emotional and Expressive Someone on called...

We present here the original work in gouache, gold and pencil of the black panther. From this original, the artist made a wood engraving of which he made about twenty prints himself. These proofs were not marketed as they were, Gaston Suisse reworked each of the proofs using Indian ink washes and golds of different colors, in order to obtain different effects for each proof, which are thus unique original works. Born in 1896 in a family of artists, his father Georges was a close friend of Siegfried Bing and a great lover of Japanese art and a bibliophile. He passed his taste for art to his son whom he often took to draw at the Botanic Garden . Around 1910, Gaston Suisse, who hasn't entered yet the artistic school, met Paul Jouve, then 18 years his elder, who was already famous. In 1911, at the age of 17, he entered the National School of Decorative Art where he followed the teachings of Paul Renouard. Thanks to his knowledge and taste for the Japanese art, he chose lacquer painting as his specialty. His practice of this noble and demanding subject were so much appreciated that he was awarded with two gold medals in 1913 and 1914. Mobilized during the war , he joined the army and go in Salonika where he found his friend Jouve. In 1918, he finished his studies at the School of Applied Arts in order to perfect his training. He learned in particular the techniques of gilding and oxidation of metals. The first productions of Gaston Suisse, furniture and objects in lacquer with geometrical patterns, were an instant success and Suisse was appointed as member of Salon d'Automne in 1924, the very year of his first exhibition. Considered as an artist-decorator, his sincere and deep friendship with Jouve linked him in parallel with the groups of the animaliers of the Jardin des Plantes and became a close friend of Edouard-Marcel Sandoz. When travelling to Maghreb and Middle-East between 1923 and 1925, he produced numerous drawings representing antelopes, apes and fennec foxes...
