About

Abraham Walkowitz, Untitled (Isadora Duncan Dancing 2), pencil and watercolor wash, 1910. Signed and dated in pencil. A fine, spontaneous, subtly colored work, on thin, cream wove drawing paper, tipped onto a warm white support sheet, in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards. Provenance: Ex. collection Judy T. Stark, a friend of the artist who danced with Isadora Duncan. ABOUT THIS WORK Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965), studied at the Cooper Union, the Educational Alliance in New York City, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. He was closely affiliated with the Stieglitz circle and the internationally renowned 291 Gallery. His work is represented in virtually every major American museum. Walkowitz met Isadora Duncan in the sculptor Auguste Rodin’s studio during a trip to France in 1906. After their introduction, Walkowitz watched her dance, bare-foot and free-flowing, at a private salon the following day. The experience inspired Walkowitz to such an extent that he went on to create numerous gestural renderings of her dancing, principally from memory, throughout his lifetime. About Duncan, Walkowitz recalled, “She was a Muse. She had no laws. She didn’t dance according to rules. She created. She was like music. When she moved, it was like the sound of violins; she was the Walt Whitman of women.” Duncan’s unique tunics and scarves, which she fashioned herself and wore as everyday dress, were based on classical Greek sculpture and art, which she had seen at the Louvre and British Museum. She performed to wide acclaim throughout Europe, and her work in free, interpretative movement, formed the basis for modern dance.
