About

An original gouache and ink painting on paper by Contemporary female artist Anne Muntges. "What I have not drawn, I have never really seen and when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle." (Frederick Franck) These sentiments ring true for the intricate, detailed drawings that Anne Muntges creates. The Catalogue of Ownership drawings reveal a more personal narrative. The premise of this body of work is to carefully and faithfully catalog every object in the artists' possession, from the grand to the mundane. Muntges has created her own rules regarding what might be included: Was it bought by me? Is it in my name? Was it gifted through or by me(often as related to my child)? It is a tedious project that grows in strength and grandness as the multitude of accumulated objects reveals itself. As with all of Muntges work, intense observation and inscrutable attention to detail, as well as her technical facility, brings a richness, depth, and strength to the drawings. The renderings can exist simply as delicately captured records of objects and whereabouts, but, more significantly, they act as a mirror for us to gaze through, capturing a moment in our shared place and time. Anne Muntges makes highly detailed drawings, prints & installation art based on concepts of home. Born in Denver & based in Brooklyn, she received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, & her MFA from the University at Buffalo. Muntges has been awarded a NYFA Fellowship in Drawing and many residencies & fellowships including Anchor Graphics, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, BRIC, Guttenberg Arts and the Roswell Artist and Residency Program. Additionally, her work has been widely exhibited & is included in numerous private & public collections, including ones at California College of the Arts, Library of Congress, Joan Flasch Library and the Burchfield Penney.
