The dramatic yet modern drawing on strong cotton Arches paper is a depiction of a notorious photograph taken by Mathew Brady of Nimrod Burke, an African American solider who was born into a slavery and went on to fight in the American Civil War as First Sergeant of the 36th Ohio Infantry. The extremely detailed portrait is made solely with black ballpoint pen. Under close inspection one can see the multitude of sweeping and crosshatching lines the artist used to create the portrait. The work is signed in the lower right corner. It is installed with two dark red powder coated aluminum bars so one can suspend the work from a wall without having it framed behind glass.
