On offer two original Nag Arnoldi drawings with absolutley firm provenance: Both works were gifted by the artist in friendship to my uncle, then by decent to my cousin and now to me.

Nag Arnoldi was a noted Swiss sculptor and painter, who based his artistic output around core themes, which he was able to re-interpret over the years with great consistency and perseverance. From the very beginning, among these there were circus-inspired motifs and the horse, the bull and the Minotaur, animals such as the cat or the owl and a series of war and sacred motifs and classical themes.
Originally Nag studied theater costume and dress design at the Lugaresi School in Milan which he finishes in 1950. Until about 1957 Nag explores and discovers various art throughout Europe – from the glas workshops in Murano, Italy to Picasso, Marino Marini, Bernard Buffet and others. In 1957 he celebrates his first break through exhibiting his work (paintings, carvings, glass and ceramics) in my home town Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. In 1960 he visits Mexico, which leads to meeting the artists Rufino Tamayo and David Alfaro Siqueiros who noticeably influenced his artistic development. From Mexico, he would frequently visit galleries and museums in the United States. During those years, he alternates regularly between painting and sculpture, with his bronzes becoming markedly anti-naturalistic and expressive.
The years from 1964 to 1974 (This is the era when the two drawings on offer were created) were an explosive decade of numerous international which will made the work of Nag well known in Mexico City (1964), New York (1964/1966), San Francisco (1967), San Diego (1968) and Los Angeles (1969). At the same time, more and more foundations and institutions acquire some of his works to be placed in public areas, for instance: Mexico City, Chapultepec Park (1964), Victorville (California), Victorville College Collection (1965), San Diego (California), Fine Arts Gallery (1966), Mexico City, Mexican Headquarters of the Iberia airline (1967), London, Acrow Organization, Lausanne, new Headquarters of “Philip Morris Europe” (1970).
Nag now mainly concentrates on sculpture and settles down in his native Ticino in Switzerland, in a village called Comano. He remains extremely active and his creativity evolves constantly. The body of his notable work and public installations are too numerous to list here. Google will able to tell you a lot more about this most remarkable Swiss artist.

Going by the various inscriptions an the backing paper, this drawing was made in 1918 when Gustav was twenty years old and passed on three years later to Gertrud Melcher on the 1. 2. 1921. I have no reasons to doubt this information. The small drawing is still in its unopened frame, so maybe there is more information to be discovered , however this will be the privilege of the next owner. The picture also has retained its original antique frame – note that it has lost over the years various sections of the gesso decoration. The very precisely executed drawing is most enjoyable to look at and doing so, remember you are looking through the eyes of a young man, who saw this foreign sea cape over a century ago. Gustav Melcher began his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt.
