Since 2015, she has assumed as the post of honorary president of The Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Insitute. In 2006, she has initiated the program " Walking Workshop" which engaged to develop chinese public art. Zhang Chunyang is one of the few contemporary Chinese female artists who insist on creating in a critical way of Expressionism. Whether she works on portrait or landscape, the painting has always been a medium for her to find self-awareness.She regards the "inner life" as the only important subject of artistic expression. In referencing to her own rich life experience, Zhang has developed di erent themes over years - from Series "Bath" to " the Horse Whisper". These works reveal an fusion of influnce- from impressionist's painting to traditional Chinese Shan-Shui ( Mountain-Sea) painting, She takes an intuitive approche to painting, endowing much of her works with a sense of mystery and lyricism. In 2010, the artist started to create a number of watercolour-based works during her pregnancy, often with surface rendered in bright palette. Compared with her previous gloomy muted tone works in Munch's style, the drawings are fragrant with scents from the sunshine and fresh air. The artist was revolutionary in technique, she capture sensitively females charming vulnerability and the constancy of family love. The birth of her son bring her another life and world. The artist opened a dialogue between herself, her baby and a horse -- re ering to her series of paintings as " The Horse Whisper". This series regarded as her intime diary that explores psychological space. The fluidity of her lateral and vertical brushwork, the rough brushstrokes, the misty surface and mysterious tones of paintings of the series all reveal a highly personal memorial. In recent years, the artist's solo shows were staged at CGK Kunming contemporary Art Museum, Yunan, China (2021); Today Art Museum, beijing, China(2014); Hexiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen, China ( 2014); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2008); “You are inside”gallery SiHeyuan, Beijing China(2006). • Chinatown, San Francisco
    By Edward Wilson Currier
    Located in London, GB
'Chinatown, San Francisco', gouache on fine art paper, by Edward Wilson Currier (1903). Spofford Alley in San Francisco's Chinatown is best known for an address (number 36) where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen plotted the overthrow of China's last dynasty. During Prohibition, it was the site of turf battles over local bootlegging and protection rackets. Today it is lined with seniors' community centres. However, the quiet alley livens up in the evenings when a Chinese orchestra strikes up a tune, mah-jongg games begin with a cascade of clicking tiles, and barbers and florists use the pretence of sweeping their doorsteps to gossip. In this artist's depiction, a man smokes a long-stemmed Chinese pipe under the awning and colourful lanterns hanging from the wooden supports while a child looks on. The artwork is interesting from several standpoints including architectural, cultural and historical. Shortly after this work was painted, the neighbourhood was completely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake that levelled most of the city. From 1910 to 1940, Chinese immigrants were detained at the Angel Island...
