About

A unique, double-sided pencil drawing on paper. Alternative drawing on verso, framed to showcase both sides of the paper.

To produce his murals, Sargent painted monumental canvases in his studios in London and Boston, adhering them to the building walls (rather than creating them as frescoes). Along with his murals, he produced plaster reliefs, frames, and ornamentation for over the doorways and balconies in the rooms where his murals were to be installed. The present work appears to be a study for a garland decoration, likely for the rotunda of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The mural projects for the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts lasted for thirty years, and the installation of the murals in the Museum of Fine Arts was the culmination of Sargent's career as an artist and muralist.

This drawing has been reviewed and accepted by the John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonné committee.
