Artist: Attributed to William Marlow (British 1740-1813) Title: Cattle in the countryside Medium: Watercolour on paper Condition: The work is in good condition, with wear commiserate with age. Housed in a period gold plaster frame with new double archival mats. It is glazed with anti-reflective invisible glass “ArtGlass AR70” which has UV block of 70% visible light transmission of 99% and a reflection of 1%. Provenance: Private Collection London Private Collection Sydney About: Attributed to William Marlow, this is an early 19th century, watercolour on paper. Cattle by the Countryside, captures the beauty of the English landscape. Verso to the work is a further sketch along with the initials WM 1811 Marlow was a skilled landscape painter specialising in topographical views. He studied with the artist Samuel Scott and at the St Martin’s Lane Academy, London. His travels in France and Italy resulted in numerous drawings, especially of picturesque ruins, which formed the basis of many of the paintings made on his return to Britain. His copies of paintings by Canaletto and his own depictions of Italian scenes were popular as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. Marlow was also commissioned by his aristocratic patrons to paint views of their country houses, gardens and estates. Many of these works being undertaken with preliminary sketches in watercolour.
