Thames Barge. c. 1915. Russet pencil drawing. 10 3/4 x 14 3/8. Provenance: a collection of Smart etchings, drawings and watercolors. Drawn on cream wove paper with deckle edges on two sides. Vertical centerfold and unobtrusive scattered foxing. .Annotated 'all lower deck grey hull brown deck houses' in brown pencil, lower right. Provenance: a collection of the artist's drawings and watercolors. Housed in a 16x 20-inch archival mat, suitable for framng. A leading English etcher, engraver and watercolorist, of the 1920's and 1930's, Douglas Ian Smart studied printmaking techniques in London, under Sir Frank Short. Smart was a member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy. He etched and painted in England, France, Spain, and Italy. He exhibited at Colnaghi, Chenil Gallery, Connell and Son Gallery, The Fine Art Society, the Glasgow Institute, The International Society, The Walker Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He specialized in architectural subjects.
