Circa 1950

About the Item

Mid Century Modern East Bay IV Abstracted Landscape by Erle Loran Dynamic mid century abstracted geometric landscape drawing of the East Bay California landscape by Erle Loran (American, 1905-1999), circa 1950. From a collection of estate of Ruth Loran (wife of artist). Presented in mat. Unframed. Image size: 13"H x 16"W. Provenance: This piece was from Erle Loran's sketch book and this drawing was then matted, purchased from the Erle Loran estate and the Carlson Gallery, Carmel. Erle Loran was a modernist of urban-coast views and geometric painting. Loran was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1905. He attended the University of Minnesota for a while before studying at the Minneapolis School of Art, under Cameron Booth, and graduated in 1926. Loran was awarded a traveling scholarship from the Chaloner Foundation (Paris Prize) after graduation and spent the next four years in Europe, living in Cézanne’s studio. Loran had always been fascinated by the work of the artist Paul Cézanne, and it motivated him throughout his life both in his painting and his writing. He would later pen several books and articles based on his time spent in what was once Cézanne’s world. Once he returned home, Loran moved to California and began not only painting and continuing his art career, but also took up teaching at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as chairman of the art department from 1952-56 and continued teaching there until his retirement in 1973, when he was awarded a University Citation. Berkeley once again awarded Loran, this time in 1981, declaring him an Emeritus Professor. During the 1940s, Loran belonged to a group of some twenty artists that produced lithographs for the “Chronicle Contemporary Graphics” project. Around the same time he published two books (one of which was the successful Cézanne Composition) and two articles in art magazines the following decade. By the late 1960s Loran had changed focus and began painting more abstract images, fusing together Op Art, Pop Art and Hard Edge. Perhaps his new direction was influenced by his time spent in New York learning under the artist Hans Hoffman, an artist from Europe who was heavily interested in bringing modern European techniques and philosophies to America. Loran was eventually hindered by visual impairment, but continued painting until about a year before his death. He passed away in Berkeley, California in 1999.

Unsigned, Gifted the artist Charles Cajori by the artist. Accompanied by COA. Mercedes Matter was destined for a life in art. She was the daughter of Mercedes de Cordoba, a former model for Edward Steichen and other members of the Photo-Secession, and Arthur B. Carles, an important early modernist American painter who studied the art of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse in Paris in the 1910s. This early and persistent exposure to modern art led Matter herself to begin painting at the age of six. In the early 1930s, she studied with the artist Hans Hofmann, like nearly every important American abstract painter of the next generation. This German-born painter is of course famous for teaching the concepts of abstract painting that would define the New York School: the “push-pull” approach to composition and the focus on the picture plane. During the Depression, Matter worked for the Works Progress Administration alongside Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, and Lee Krasner. The project she and de Kooning collaborated on was directed by Fernand Léger, for whom she served as a translator. In the early 1950s, Mercedes was among the first female members of the Club, an organization of downtown artists that held frequent discussion evenings; she was also a regular at the Cedar Tavern. For Mercedes, “The Club was marvelous. It brought together in one place, at one time, the greatest diversity of artists—as nothing had done before or has since. . . . The end of that marvelous time came when American art became big business...

Jacques Yankel, pseudonym of Jakob Kikoine, born on April 14 , 1920 in Paris, is a French painter and sculptor. He is the son of the painter Michel Kikoine. Born in Boucicaut hospital, Jacques lived as a child in the artists' colony La Ruche in Paris. He grew up to the age of ten at La Ruche, the workshop created for artists by the sculptor Alfred Boucher, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. Around him live also other artists, including the inseparable Pincus Krémègne and Chaïm Soutine, arrived from Vilnius in Russia where they met. It is an extraordinary intellectual and artistic universe where the genius of the artists and their great poverty rub shoulders in a Paris which hosts this Expressionist school which will become "the School of Paris". Chagall, Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Max Jacob and others. When he had just started studying at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he was forced to flee to Southern France with his family to escape the Nazis. During the Second World War, he held temporary jobs in printing and engraving workshops, notably at the Draeger printing press in Toulouse, where events led him to take refuge with his family. From 1940 to 1945, he pursued very advanced studies of geology at the Faculty of Sciences, specializing in micro-geology. He graduated in 1943. In 1947, he participates episodically as an amateur painter in the Chariot group, with the artists Jean Hugon, Michel Goedgebuer, Robert Pagès, Christian Schmidt, Andre-Francois Vernette, Jean Teulieres. The group is active until 1954. In 1949, he was hired by the Colonial Office for the geological map of Gao - Timbuktu - Tabankort in French West Africa . From this episode, he will keep a certain taste for African art of which he will become a collector. The following year, he unexpectedly met Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre in Gao. The latter encourages him to return to painting. He won the Neuman First Prize, which he shared with Reginald Pollack and a Fénéon Prize Scholarship. Among his friends are Clavé, Cottavoz, Pelayo, Hanna Ben-dov, Pollack, Jean Jansem, Roger Lersey. In 1953, accompanied by Orlando...
