Francis Luis Mora
Forest Idyll Allegory drawing

circa 1900

About the Item

Francis Luis Mora is loved sketching and drawing and did so for almost every day of his career. This allegorical and very finished pencil drawing depicts a Faun in the forest. Possibly Mora was illustrating for a novel which accounts for the amount of detail. There are highlights of deep brown ink laid in in various spots and the drawing is framed in a fine, older ornate frame. A very appealing, fun and yet serious artistic work by the hand of one of America's beloved artists. The figure is clearly allegorical and there are even symbolist faces in the forest which was not often an element Mora incorporated into his work. The highlighted areas may have been for reproductive purposes to have some areas print more strongly or his re-working elements for printing purposes. Some of our sketchbooks to which this work came from, had female forms in nature as well, albeit with less of an allegorical feel so they could have been a working through a book project.
