A meticulously detailed pencil rendering, on cream wove paper, in very good condition. Archivally float-mounted and matted to museum standards. Exbihited: Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, Norfolk, Virginia. American Drawing Annual XVIII, 1959. 'Her touch could be feathery, as if she might bruise the plants if she pressed too hard. Her attention to detail can only be called passionate, as was her attention to the rhythm within a plant or a composition. The trees she singled out to depict were often her life’s companions, chosen for strong and particular character, and repeatedly drawn.” —from 'This Flowering Earth – The Drawings and Etchings of Helen Loggie', Exhibition, 2000, Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington ABOUT THE ARTIST Helen Amanda Loggie (1895 - 1976) was born in Bellingham, Washington, in 1895, where her father and his brother owned the Whatcom Falls Mill Company. Her well-to-do family encouraged her early artistic interests and their support enabled her to pursue her talent without the concern of making a living from her art. Loggie studied at Smith College for 2 years and then lived and worked in New York City from 1916 - 1924. She enrolled in the Art Students League, where she studied with George Luks and Robert Henri. She also studied privately with Mahonri Young and John Taylor Arms. It was Arms who encouraged Loggie to seriously pursue etching, and they remained lifelong friends and colleagues with Arms proofing many of her plates throughout her career. She traveled to Europe on several occasions for extended periods in the 1920s to study the art of the masters, the gothic cathedrals, and the vivid scenes of European life. She honed her technique and produced drawings of incredible detail and sensitivity. Near the end of her time in Europe, she realized that she wanted her art to represent her heritage and the special beauty of the area she called home. In 1927 Loggie returned to Bellingham, where she lived in the family home and on Orcas Island for the rest of her life. She remained in close touch with her New York artist friends and others, exhibiting her etchings and drawings locally, nationally, and internationally in both group and one-person exhibitions. Beginning in 1938 Loggie gave her tireless support and professional advice to the fledgling Western Washington College of Education’s Studio Gallery, and through her many contacts assisted the college in attracting high-quality exhibitions. Loggie's archives, consisting of numerous prints and drawings, reside in the collection at the Western Gallery of Art at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. In 2018 the Lambiel Museum collection of Helen Loggie's work was acquired by Brad Parberry. The collection is now housed at The Helen Loggie Museum of Art, located at the former Territorial Courthouse in Bellingham, Washington. Loggie received numerous honors and awards during her life, and many of her etchings were placed in public collections, including the Library of Congress, the British Museum, and the National Academy of Design. Loggie's love of the Northwest, its mountains, islands, and especially trees spoke to her heart and ultimately became her passion and mission in life. Her particular accomplishment was to use her exquisite draughtsmanship and exceptional etching technique to capture the unique beauty of the Salish Sea region of the Washington coast.
