About the Item

Signed lower left "John Faulkner, RHA" (Anglo-Irish, 1835-1894) and painted circa 1880. A substantial nineteenth century watercolor and gouache showing a group of shepherds, milkmaids and harvesters gathering in a wooded glade and preparing for the end of their work day. This notable Anglo-Irish painter studied at the Royal Dublin Society School and began exhibiting with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1852, at the age of seventeen. After moving to London, he exhibited widely and with success, including at London's Royal Academy (The Home of the Red Deer, 1865), the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute. Faulkner also painted in the United States during the 1880's before returning to Ireland. Faulkner is well-listed in all relevant art dictionaries including Benezit and Thieme-Becker.
