About the Item

9"x12" pen and ink drawing signed on reverse by the aritst. This pen and ink drawing depicts a river path detailed with branches and sticks along the river's edge. Small stones and foliage, plants and ivy intermingle with the brambles to each side of the river. The artist, Kathleen Vance portrays the riverbed in pure white with the negative space of the paper in this composition with the implied waterflow curving down the pathway. Finely drawn and detailed in black ink, this is a site drawing from the artist's visits to local waterways. Kathleen Vance is an environmental artist who creates projects that connect people to local aspects of nature that are overlooked or underappreciated. Vance received her B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and her M.F.A. from Hunter College in sculpture. She has received numerous grants and awards for her artwork including: a travel grant to research the geo-thermal regions of Iceland, a grant from the Puffin foundation for public sculpture, a development grant from Aljira, Center for Contemporary Art in conjunction with the Creative Capital Foundation, and a grant from the Brooklyn Arts council which aided the development and implementation of an outdoor community based art project in East New York. Ms. Vance was artist in resident in Berlin, Germany, presenting a workshop on environmental arts in connection with the Grunewald Parks Department in Germany. Her work was recently featured in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, the Bruce Museum, VOLTA New York, Orlando Museum of Art, EXPO Chicago and the Weatherspoon Art Museum. This Spring Kathleen’s commissioned work, “Brandywine River” Installation will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. Kathleen Vance has exhibited extensively in New York and internationally and continues to live and work in Brooklyn, New York.
