About Patrick Van Caeckenbergh (Artist)
Patrick Van Caeckenbergh is a Belgian artist born in 1960, currently living and working in Sint-Kornelis-Horebeke, Belgium. Van Caeckenbergh works in an array of media, including sculpture, drawing and installation. Pairing a strong desire to collect, order and classify information with a thorough research process, the artist places primacy on the process of generating and exploring ideas. He is particularly interested in exploring ologies — meaning the study of a given scientific or medical field. Van Caeckbergh draws on a long tradition of Belgian Surrealism in addition to his rich library of scientific diagrams, religious stories, fairy tales and other texts in order to create his complex images and sculptures.
The tree drawings are a project Van Caeckenbergh began in 2007 after being inspired by the trees in Belgium, particularly those in his own backyard. Van Caeckenbergh does not draw specific trees; rather he sees his drawings as architectural and/or physical structures and creates each image by taking formal and textural elements from many trees and combining them into one form. His process of creating these drawings is meditative and free-form. He describes the process as “dancing on paper" and thinks of them in relation to abstract expressionism. Van Caeckenbergh has built up these drawings over a course of seven years, often coming back and reworking different portions of the drawings. The drawings have seams in some places — this is because the artist may lay a new piece of paper over a section so he can keep expanding on it. He does not erase his marks.
