A walker on a country road
Signed lower right
watercolor on paper
25.5 x 35.3 cm
framed under glass 44.5 x 54.5 cm This antique frame is quite damaged, particularly in the lower left corner (see photo), but I kept it because it has a real charm that suits it well.
This is a beautiful example of Paul-Emile Lecomte's distinctive style. His elegant and light brushwork perfectly captures the peaceful atmosphere of a country road.
Paul Emile Lecomte just as his uncle Paul had excelled in the difficult art of watercolor, which, thanks to its lightness, makes variations in weather and climate sensitive. This is clearly visible here
An article written by a French art historian, devoted to Paul Emile Lecomte, gave an excellent account of Paul Lecomte's decisive role in his nephew's career. He constantly encouraged him in his vocation as a painter and some very fine letters bear witness to this.
This intimate bond between the two artists can also be seen in their works. The more modern development of the nephew's art also enabled Paul to free his touch, following his example and moving towards post-impressionism.
What they have in common is a mastery of technique and instantly recognisable styles, as this watercolour shows.
Paul Emile Lecomte (1877– 1950). Painter of watercolors and oil paintings, etcher, and engraver. He was the pupil of Fernand Cormon and of his uncle Paul Lecomte. He became Offical Painter of the French Navy in 1921.
He painted at the beginning of his career in the same style as his famous uncle, Paul Lecomte (1842-1920) . His first works are often attributed falsely to him as their signature can be confounded. But he soon developped his own style, of which this work is a very good example.
