Description: This luminous plein air study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the sunlit slopes of La Fontaine de Vaucluse, one of Provence’s most picturesque villages. Tucked beneath the Vaucluse mountains, the scene brims with movement and light — whitewashed rooftops cascade down the hillside amid a patchwork of ochres, greens, and deep indigo shadows.
Painted in Neveu’s characteristically expressive yet disciplined hand, the work combines fluid washes with confident linework. The artist’s use of negative space and loose tonal layering creates a shimmering sense of depth, evoking the heat and texture of the southern French landscape.
Executed on perforated sketchbook paper, this piece was almost certainly painted en plein air, offering an unfiltered glimpse into Neveu’s spontaneous process. The quick, instinctive mark-making speaks to his background as a trained draughtsman with a modern sensibility for abstraction and rhythm.
A graduate of the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, Neveu served as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, later becoming President of the painting section. His work bridges traditional French landscape painting with the freshness of mid-century plein air technique.
